Book Review

This past weekend I read Mitch Albom's new book, entitled, For One More Day. It's a really good read, and a fast one too. I read it on a Sunday afternoon. It's rather "Dickens-esque" in the sense that a man who feels life is not worth living spends a day with his dead mother and is given a new lease on life. Albom poses the question what would we do if we could have one more day with someone we love? It's a strange thought, but no doubt one that we all consider when we lose someone.

Growing up, the main character is a pretty normal boy. He grows up during a time when divorce is frowned upon, and his parents are the only ones no longer together. His mother struggles to support two kids alone. He has a brief stint as a professional baseball player. There are no guarantees in life, and his baseball career did not work out. He was forced to take sales jobs, which he hated. He became an alcoholic, and in time decided he needed to kill himself. He went back to his home town to visit the home in which he grew up. There he met his long-deceased mother, who helped him to realize the importance of family and not taking the time you have with them for granted.

This book is wonderful, and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading.
